June 2009 Brd. Mtg. Minutes
RAINIER VALLEY ROTARY
Minutes Board Meeting 6/25/09, 4:00 pm
Present: Turner,Williams,DeHaan, Gutknecht
Also present; Bernie Lucking, Julie LeFebvre
There was a question as to whether the Rainier Chamber of Commerce was allowed to be a member of our Rotary, since there were mixed opinions and examples. Julie said she would check and get back to us.
Howard delivered the Rotary binder to ElDoris, our incoming president. The binder contains minutes of past board meetings, examples of the "Member Proposal" form, "Expense Reimbursement" form ,etc.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Dictionary Project: We were informed that dictionaries would go up to $9 each next year. There was discussion as to whether to continue, and if so, where would the funds come from and who would be in charge? There is no committee chair for this project at this time.
1. Jayne read some of the thank-you letters and artwork from the Kimball third graders who received dictionaries. They were obviously a big hit.
2. Mention was made of a Creativity Competition that Bud W had brought up to Howard. Howard once again suggested that typed proposals be submitted on all project ideas and suggestions.
3. There was some discussion regarding quarterly, biannual and monthly reports, membership attendance reports in particular and how best to submit them. Julie gave Jayne some names and numbers to follow up with on that: Gary Bruner (who is currently out of town) and Greg Haffner of the Kent Rotary (whom Jayne has spoken with and was sent an attendance form that is due on the 15th of every month).
4. We were reminded about Rotary Night at the Hockey game Oct 23rd 2009.
5. Book Drive: Rusty reported that a District Simplified grant is being submitted requesting $5000 toward the book drive, which we will be holding in conjunction with Mercer Island Rotary (via Page Ahead). There was some discussion of potential matching funds to be raised. Details to be clarified at a later date.
6. There was a brief discussion on membership. We now have 10 members, which is wonderful though short of our goal.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. There will be no Pirate Pancake Breakfast this fall.
2. Howard mentioned our sponsoring a program or series of programs regarding Crime Prevention/Public Safety by a group called CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). We discussed having a member of CPTED speak at one of our weekly meetings and then decide the details of such a program and what potential it might mean for community and membership enhancement. (Neighborhood watches, handouts, mention was made of National Night Out on August 4th 2009 and how we might be able to coordinate with that.
3. There was a brief discussion of area Pea Patch development potential.
Meeting was then adjourned, apx 5:45 pm.
Members directory coming.
