Wendi Fisher brings us perspectives on how chess teaches critical thinking and social skills in 3rd and 4th grade. Locally-based, America's Foundation For Chess offers school curriculum programming to teach the ancient game of chess, making it fresh and interesting in today's modern world.

June 15 Mtg. - Carlos Aragon: "Marketing Rotary"
How do you extend the value of being a Rotary member to others? Is Rotary cool enough that you should feel proud to ask people to try out a meeting, social, or service project work party? What's your "Rotary Elevator Speech?" Is there a career benefit to being involved? What if you don't like "Selling?" How do you approach people? Should you have something to show them or hand them? Carlos Aragon will present some ideas which may prove helpful. Bring questions!
June 8 Mtg. - Bob Hoaglund - Shelterbox
When hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods strike, how do we shelter the survivors for the first few days and weeks, while they rebuild? Shelterbox provides complete shelter for a handful of people, plus basic water filtration, etc. Come find out about this fascinating program.
June 1 Mtg. - Visit Rainier Valley Food Bank 4205 Rainier Ave. So.
Food bank demands go up and up. How does Rainier Valley Food Bank, located a few blocks North of our regular weekly meeting, keep up? Sam Osborne will give us a brief walking tour - explain where all the food comes from, how the food is distributed, and who the clients are. Are these just regular people avoiding the weekly grocery bill? You be the judge. Location: 4205 Rainier Avenue South (near Gennesee Street).
A light breakfast will be served.
May 25 Program - Ruth Moen - "Keeping The Big Bad Wolf From The Door"
Ruth brings several stories from her experience as a trial lawyer to demonstrate how the "Four Way Test" might save a lot of trouble and expense in our litigious society. One of these is about a traveling executive, rear-ended in an accident, who didn't get appropriate treatment for his brain injuries and over the next 18 months experienced a collapse of his ability to do his work.
Community Service - Restore Cheasty Greenspace
Cheasty Greenspace is located just South of Alaska Street and West of Martin Luthor King Way. This Seattle park was completely over-run with ivy and blackberries just 3 years ago. Neighbors of Cheasty Greenspace started cutting ivy and clearing, and now Rainier Valley Rotary's become involved.

Sonia Doughty of Washington Cash will present ideas about successful micro-lending programs and how people can use local resources to start their own resilient businesses. Washington Cash has successfully funded over 500 business start-ups in and around Seattle in the past 10 years. Are garage businesses, push-cart businesses, kitchen-table businesses a solution for our recent economic woes? Bring your questions and expect a lively discussion.
